3-D-2: Documents, Data, and Cartoons
(Note: I couldn't find any relevant cartoons. Therefore, all my resources for this assignment are either documents or data.)

1. Letter - Milton Hershey wrote this letter to his uncle requesting funds after his first business venture quickly ended. I can use this to show how he struggled before reaching success and how determined he was.
2. Hotel Hershey - While most of this article is a secondary source, there are certain primary source excerpts which include direct quotations from M.S. Hershey about the construction of the hotel. I can use the direct quotes by him to demonstrate precisely what he thought about building the Hotel Hershey.
3. Land Deed - You have to click on the picture at right to see the copy of the land deed from Milton Hershey and his wife to Gabriel Trump. I can use this as an example of how Mr. Hershey encouraged the people of his town to become home-owners.
4. Milton Hershey Chronology - Although this is technically not data, it does include a comprehensive timeline of major events beginning in 1862 and concluding 2008. I can use information from here to pinpoint key events that relate to my topic.
5. Newspaper Articles - (Apparently, the link takes you to the search page, not the specific articles. I tried saving the pages, but kept encountering problems. If you click My Collection on the lower left side, this should take you to the saved articles.) The information I found on this website includes articles about Milton Hershey, his company, and his town. Additionally, I found several articles detailing the income and expenditures for The Hershey Trust Company. I can use the articles to demonstrate what others thought of him at the time, and I can compare/contrast the finances of The Hershey Trust Company between years (i.e. 1919 and 1926 OR 1919 and 2007).
6. The M.S. Foundation Agreement of Trust - A picture of the original document is included, as is the entire text of the original establishment of the Hershey Trust. I can use this to show Mr. Hershey's intentions firsthand when creating this foundation.

4-D-1: Photos and Posters (and other visual primary sources)

1. Hershey Community Center - This photograph shows the Hershey Community Center in 1933. I can use this to show how Milton Hershey wanted to provide for his employees and the people of his town.

2. Power of Promotion - Power of Promotion is one of the exhibits at The Hershey Story Museum. This page gives an overview of the exhibit. If you click on the second picture, you can see an example of a poster the company used. I can use the information from the exhibit (which I plan to visit) to learn more about how Milton Hershey used posters and other advertising tools to promote his products.

3. Chocolate Bar Postcards - "Between 1909 and 1918 Hershey Chocolate Company included specialized sized postcards with their Hershey's Milk Chocolate bars. These are a sample of the 88 different images that appeared on Hershey's bar cards." I can use these to show images of the company, product, and town.

4. Milton Hershey Archival Photos - Twelve photos on Milton Hershey are presented here, each with a brief caption. I can use these to demonstrate his many interests and how he interacted with others.

5. Bar Wrappers Over the Years - This exhibit from the Hershey Community Archives chronicles the chocolate bar wrappers from 1900 to 2005. I can use these pictures along with the captions to demonstrate how much Mr. Hershey's main company focus has changed its advertising.

5-D-1: Audio and Music

1. 7 Golden Rules of Milton Hershey - This audio CD describes the rules which Milton Hershey followed in creating his business and town. I can use or reference excerpts from this to show the principles he believed in.

2. Biography: Milton Hershey - This 45 minute audio production by A & E tells the "story of Milton Hershey, creator of the chocolate empire, who became a leading philanthropist. This profile follows his rise from poverty to development of his chocolate formula and the creation of his "candy city", complete with hotels, hospital, and amusement park." I can use this as an overview of important events in Mr. Hershey's life.

3. Music, Movies, & Literature Timeline - This timeline is from 1900-1909. There are also other links to music, movies, and literature for other decades. While this site doesn't connect to Milton Hershey specifically, I can use the information provided here to set a context for the culture of the time.

4. Chat with Milton Hershey - Here is a collection of quotes by Milton Hershey with footnoted references. I can use these quotes to demonstrate his exact thoughts on various topics.

5. Milton Hershey Play - Original music composed and produced for Milton Hershey, the Play. There is a preview music link at the bottom, or I could purchase the audio CD to demonstrate what the producers of this play thought would be suitable for telling M.S. Hershey's story.

6. Voice of America - You can listen to the audio or read the transcript of this podcast. Each week, this program focuses on an important American and the impact they had on others. This one is entitled "Milton Hershey Built a Successful Business and a Sweet Town." I can use this to show the impact Mr. Hershey's choices had on others and why he is considered an important American.

7. Oral History Interviews - There are over 102 oral history interviews listed. Each gives a brief description, but most focus on the person's childhood memories of Milton Hershey, his company, the school, important buildings, and interesting things in the town. The primary formats for the information are email, transcript, and audiocassette. I can use the information from these interviews to provide first-hand information about many different subtopics.

6-D-1: Video and Maps

1. How Chocolate is Made - "In this clip from Modern Marvels, we learn how chocolate is made at the Hershey factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The cocoa beans are dried and mixed with milks and butters until you get a sweet chocolate paste that is used to make chocolate." I can use this to show the chocolate-making process.

2. Milton Hershey: The Chocolate King - "Documentary profile of Milton Snavely Hershey -- builder of the Hershey chocolate empire and a legacy of philanthropy." While this isn't a primary source, I think it would contain primary sources such as pictures, music, video footage, maps, and more.

3. Making Chocolate - The Hershey's Company has put together this video to show the start-to-finish process of how they make chocolate: raw ingredients, cocoa bean processing, milling and pressing, mixing the ingredients, refining, making Hershey's products, and Hershey's family of brands. I can use this to show not only the chocolate-making process, but also the widespread prevalence of Hershey's products.

4. Ace of Cakes: Behind the Scenes - Go behind the scenes as the crew visits the Hershey factory and school. I can use this to show just how famous this brand created by M.S. Hershey has become.

5. The Hershey Story - This interactive museum, dedicated to the legacy of Milton Hershey, has numerous exhibits that are interesting to people of all ages. This video clip gives an overview of the museum and shows primary source video clips of Mr. Hershey, The Hershey Factory, and the Milton Hershey School.

6. Derry Township Map - Scroll down to see a historical map of Derry Township. I can use this to show the layout of the town and compare it with how it is today.

7. Derry Township Map - This map from 1876 would be great for comparing and contrasting how the area was before Milton Hershey changed it.

8. Dauphin County Map - This map from 1926 shows each of the townships. It lists the various types of roads, mileage and distances, and buildings and landmarks. I can use this map to add context to the time period in which Milton Hershey was alive and developing his company.
